Abstract

This exploratory research aims to analyse the motivations and strategies to conciliate paid employment and entrepreneurial activity in Burkina Faso. On the basis of 20 semi-structured interviews with hybrid entrepreneurs in this country of West Africa, the results show that entrepreneurial motivations are mixed, with economic and non-economic characteristics, but are also dependent on the socio-cultural context. Furthermore, hybrid entrepreneurs try to conciliate their dual role of employee-entrepreneur by delegating the current management of the business to a diversified staff, while controlling activities remotely using digital tools. The research highlights two key factors for the sustainability of the business created, so far ignored in the literature, namely the physical presence and the mental contribution of the hybrid entrepreneur. Moreover, this research suggests that public authorities should support hybrid entrepreneurship in terms of its contribution to improving the purchasing power of individuals and its capacity to create jobs.
