This article explores the relational experiences of Malagasy members within a development aid organization in Madagascar, drawing on phenomenology of practice (van Manen, 2023), concepts of symbolic capital (Bourdieu, 1986) and symbolic violence (Bourdieu et Passeron, 1970). Based on extended immersion and open-ended discussions, the study highlights the embodied effects of postcolonial asymmetries on everyday interactions: silences, adjustments and discreet forms of affirmation. The analysis reveals how norms of legitimacy are internalized and negotiated within intercultural relationships. This article accounts for a plurality of ways of inhabiting symbolic tensions, emphasizing the sensitive, situated and critical aspects of development aid relationships.
