Abstract

MT Lab is North America’s first incubator to drive entrepreneurship and innovation in the tourism, cultural, and entertainment industries. This two-sided organization serves the evolving needs of these sectors and supports the incubated organizations that will eventually meet these sectors’ needs. However, this structure creates identity tensions among its many stakeholders. This case study explores the tensions and the paradoxical role of stakeholders in the strategic development of the Montreal-based organization. At the end of this case study, involving a temporal decomposition of three periods, paradoxes emerge: organizational identity is both a structuring and an evolving construct, and by mobilizing strategic ambiguity to compromise with sources of identity ambiguity, organizational actors can also slow down their development.
