Abstract

With the actual socio-territorial recomposition occuring in rural Quebec, new habitability processes arise which are closely linked to cohabitation by individuals and groups who do not live in this space the same way. This article suggests going beyond binary reading focused on the antagonisms opposing the new and the long-established rural resident. It also suggests that it is necessary to focus on their « space of encounter » to conceptualize the new rurality that marks the beginning of the 21st century in Quebec. The space of encounter may generate tensions since it is an opportunity to confront dreams and ambitions, uses, visions and aspirations. It represents an opportunity for dialogue and democratic decision-making that shapes the new rurality.
