Abstract

Fablab is a term that describes a physical place for digital fabrication and experimentation. What does the launching of the fablab located in the “Centre d’entrepreneuriat de Shawinigan », in the Saint-Maurice region of Quebec, teach us? We chose to study the organizational levers and the monitoring indicators. The main lessons of this case are the need to situate what the fablab will be: its positioning, the actors involved, the type of governance chosen and, finally, the income model once the subsidies are exhausted. In addition, sensitive operational choices must be made regarding the degree of openness, access costs, proposed activities and forms of site management. Lastly, performance indicators allow to achieve fine guidance and site adaptation. They are not limited to traditional economic impacts, but must integrate local development, participant satisfaction, process quality and apprenticeship.
