Abstract

Since the end of the 1980s, approximately 90% of Quebec SMB belonging to traditional lines of business have been adopting new technologies in the management of their operations and in their means of production. Movement to a knowledge-based economy has grown considerably in the Montreal Metropolitan Region and more generally in the province of Quebec. This article addresses
organizational and territorial transformations, with specific attention to gender and ethnolinguistic variables. Based upon 2016 Scott’s Repertories’ Business Database, we have looked at the changes that have occurred among both the owners of business enterprises and the management team, over the past ten years in the Montreal Metropolitan Region. The data show that the differences between male and female entrepreneurs in the new economy still persist and that there has been no significant change in the percentage of women in leadership roles in the new economy. The data also reveal the active participation of the different ethnolinguistic groups in the new Montreal economy.
